Britney Hord

Library Services Manager

Largo Public Library

My name is Britney Hord and I have worked for Largo Public Library for nine years. I became a librarian
because I wanted to help people find resources and information that would help them improve their lives.
I was fortunate to find my niche as an ESL Librarian early in my career. The City of Largo recognized a
need for English language literacy in our community and the library created the position of ESL Librarian
to develop and grow a one-on-one volunteer English tutoring program.

Through the years I have been promoted to a Library Services Coordinator and now to my new position
of Library Services Manager overseeing Outreach and Community Engagement. The English Language
Learning program falls under the Outreach umbrella and now offers one-on-one tutoring, four full days
per week of English Classes offered through a partnership with Pinellas County Schools, citizenship
classes and weekly conversation classes.

In my new role as Library Services Manager I get to help seniors at Assisted Living Facilities, children at
low-income VPK’s in the community, adult high school dropouts attain their diplomas through Career
Online High School, and immigrants and refugees through the English Language Learning program. I am
passionate about helping those in need and making the library a critical hub of resources, information,
education, and entertainment in our community.

Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System

Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System’s newest location, the Arthenia L. Joyner University Area Community Library held its grand opening ceremony on Monday, March 26th.

The library is a collaboration between Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library and the School District of Hillsborough County. The building is a partnership library with Muller Magnet Elementary School. A portion of the library serves as the school’s Media Center during school hours and is available to the public during after-school library hours.

In addition to its collection of popular materials for customers of all ages, the library offers a variety of meeting spaces, computers, state-of-the-art technology and instruction, early literacy and family events, and job seeking resources and assistance.

The library was named in honor of State Senator Arthenia L. Joyner, a distinguished lawyer and politician and dedicated advocate for service, equality, and civil rights
