The issue of textbook affordability and the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) represent a new opportunity for libraries to help students save money and achieve improvements in academic performance. Although OER have been a part of the education landscape for several years, many instructors have not yet adopted them as part of their educational practice. Libraries have a key role to play in the emerging landscape of OER and textbook affordability.

Workshop Goals
Learn more about what OER are and aren’t
Gain an understanding of the importance of OER in the current landscape of higher education
Review examples of the impact of OER on both affordability and academic success
Better understand the role of libraries in supporting OER adoption and use
Discover resources to identify and evaluate OER

Biography: Elijah Scott
Elijah is the Executive Director for the Florida Academic Library Services Cooperative (FALSC), based in the Tallahassee office of the Florida Virtual Campus. Prior to joining FALSC in 2016, Elijah was the Dean for Libraries, College Testing, and Curriculum Innovation at Georgia Highlands College. Elijah has worked in college and university libraries for over 20 years, including positions in technical services, cataloging, and reference and instruction. Throughout the course of his career, Elijah has placed an emphasis on providing exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and staff. Elijah holds degrees from Cumberland College (B.A.), the University of Tennessee (M.S.), Georgia College & State University (M.A.), and the University of Georgia (Ed.S).
