2013 Visioning Challenge Videos

It would be great to incorporate into our services a way to notify patrons of new arrival books, reviews, and images that match their preferences in their profile. For example, my profile preference might be specifically children’s folklore. When a new book about children’s folklore is available, I would get an email notification with links that would direct me to a page where I can request the item(s).

How about real-time online bookclubs for those who can’t physically make it to a bookclub meeting. The host could be any librarian or paraprofessional who wants to facilitate the event. Our libraries might want to have an online open Q & A once a month to answer library related questions. And finally, why not host a real-time online chat with a local or (better yet) well known author. We could archive the transcripts for patron reference.

At present, people go to many other places BUT the library for their dose of community and culture: movie theaters, bookstores, concert venues, Starbucks, etc. Let’s take it back. Encourage local and regional artists to give concerts at the library on weekends. Have art festivals at the library on a weekend. Have local independent filmmakers host a film festival. Host dance classes, art classes, poetry slams, and writer’s workshops. Ultimately, have a 24 hour or late night coffee shop where people can feel safe hanging out. This would be another place to host local music and artists. Take back the community, libraries!

TBLC Around the Region Visioning Sessions

Visioning: The information and communication environment that libraries operate in continues to change rapidly.  It makes it difficult for people who work in libraries to clearly see the changes, challenges, and opportunities they present.  At the same time library services are changing quickly as libraries continue to innovate even during a time of serious budget challenges.

Engage: Our intent is to engage members of the TBLC community in a visioning process to identify the changes underway and innovative services that respond to them so that we can help position libraries for continued success.

Plan: The vision ideas from these sessions will be summarized and shared widely and will be used to help us plan for TBLC’s future.

Attendees: These sessions are open to all librarians, public, academic, special and k-12.

Teens Working with Seniors

Isabelle Fetherston, Pasco County Librarian, facilitates a program in the county where teens work with seniors to help them learn new technology like mobile devices. Isabelle contributed her vision for the future of Florida libraries in TBLC’s first Florida’s Visioning Challenge. Her vision was to bridge the digital divide at the library with seniors and teens.

“Bridge the digital divide at your library by making it easy for Seniors to learn how to use a computer. Train teen volunteers to give one-on-one beginning computer lessons with handouts for older adults (age 50+). Teens earn volunteer hours for scholarships and National Honor Society, while making a real difference in someone’s life. The intergenerational social aspect is great for Seniors and this program is a great confidence-builder for teens. It only costs staff time for scheduling appointments, the initial training hour for the teen, and making the handouts (you probably already have handouts from your computer classes).”

Below is the Powerpoint she uses for training the teens!

Looking Ahead: Florida’s Visioning Challenge Webinar

A few months ago, we held our first Florida Visioning Challenge.  By helping Florida libraries identify new visions, we are developing new innovative ways to make them the great 21st Century organizations they deserve to be.

The Florida Visioning Challenge winner, Jay Dela Cruz ( Hodges University) and Runner -up, Alice Graves (Remington College) will discuss their visions for the future of Florida Libraries in a one hour webinar on June 22nd. After they give a brief intro of their visions we will hold an online discussion for the other librarians who submitted visions to share their thoughts on collaboration and moving forward!

We had amazing librarians put on their creative hats, write great visions for the future of library services, and provide some terrific ideas. Come be a part of the online discussion and share your thoughts!  We want to hear YOUR visions too!!

Taking it to the Malls and the Executive Parks: Many people are too busy to visit their library. Many people don’t go to the library because they don’t know what the library has to offer. People in their 20s and 30s who do not have children are the least likely to visit public libraries. But we don’t have to wait for them to come to us. We can go to them by setting up mobile libraries where the people are. At the supermarket, at the mall, in a bar or an executive park where thousands of people work. All you need is a librarian, a laptop, and an internet connection. While you’re there, raffle off e-readers, demonstrate free downloadable music and e-books. At the bar, have an evening of karaoke songs about books (“Who Wrote the Book of Love?” “Just Like Romeo and Juliet” to name two from way-back). Anywhere a librarians hangs his/her hat is a library.
