Cataloging Services

Many libraries are faced with staff shortages in their cataloging
departments due to budget cuts or the scarcity of trained
catalogers. The TBLC is here to help.

Contact Beth Farmer at farmerb@tblc.org or (813) 622-8252
for more information or to discuss a project.

Current Cataloging
TBLC offers current cataloging services for members and
non-members. Records can be customized to include holdings
information or any other MARC tags that libraries would like to have
added or deleted. Both copy and original records can be provided
for all material formats.

Prices are per record and depend on the type of material, size of the
project and amount of customization required.

Outsourcing Consulting
Many libraries outsource their cataloging to vendors such as Baker &
Taylor or Brodart. If your library is left with no cataloging department
or no one at your library with cataloging expertise, it may be difficult
for you to work with the vendors to do the necessary setup for
outsourcing.

We can work with you to help you set up your outsourcing profile
and get MARC records loaded into your database properly.  We
typically provide this service for free to our members, but there may
be a charge depending on the complexity of the project and the
time involved.

Special Collections
Beginning in 1998-99, TBLC has applied for LSTA grant funding to
catalog Special Collections at member libraries. We plan to continue
to use grant funds to assist libraries in providing access to important
and unique collections. Grant funding pays the salary costs for
cataloging staff and may pay for OCLC charges. OCLC is used as a
source of copy cataloging, and original records are created on
OCLC for unique items.

Special Collections projects have been completed or are continuing
for these libraries:

John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
Florida Marine Research Institute (periodicals)
Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County (videorecordings)
University of South Florida, Tampa
(American Literature Special Collection, Dime Novel Collection)
University of Tampa (photographs)
Largo Library (nonprint genealogical materials)
St. Petersburg Public (indexing of St. Petersburg Times)
