Luck of the Draw @ Dunedin Public Library

Check out this GREAT idea that Katherine Kastanis in the Youth Department at Dunedin Public Library is doing for the month of March. Phyllis Gorshe, Library Director, sent us this description:  Katherine had her teen volunteers cover books with just an opening for the barcode to check out.  On the added cover, they wrote a little about the book and also added lexile and grade levels.  They are calling it “luck of the draw”

Great idea Katherine! Thanks for sharing and keep those creative ideas flowing!

Inventory of Library Services – REFORMA de Florida Survey

PrintBelow is a message from REFORMA de Florida President, Loanis Menendez-Cuesta

REFORMA de Florida, the Florida chapter of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, is compiling information to create a state-wide directory of libraries that provide services, events and activities for the Hispanic/Latino population. Among the benefits and purposes of this directory is to serve as an open resource for library staff to network, access, and share the cumulative wealth of experiences, advice, and knowledge from other professionals who serve Hispanic/Latinos. This project will grow in several stages, starting with four states where REFORMA has a strong presence including Florida, Colorado, Missouri, and New York and then reach a national level.

Joining forces with REFORMA de Florida, research partners from Florida State University are working with an IMLS grant to gather similar data to create a web-based mapping tool. iMapLibraries, as the project is called, will support librarians assessing and sharing best practices data on programs and services for diverse and Spanish-speaking learners, and  support partnerships, planning, and advocacy efforts among librarians seeking to offer learning opportunities to diverse populations.

In order to continue the development of these tools, we would like to invite library staff and professionals to answer a brief survey. The survey is available through - https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GQNCSYZ

Recognizing that often more than one person may be responsible for the planning and/or provision of these services and these services may be delivered at various locations, multiple copies of the survey can be submitted by branch, library or system. Moreover, even after you submit the survey, if you recall information relevant to this project, you can submit a second questionnaire with the new information by using different computers for each submission.

We would also like to invite you to follow-up with the development of these tools and to see the initial reports and presentations at the 2013 Florida Library Association Conference in Orlando, FL.

Thank you very much for your participation in this important collaborative project. We hope to see you at the 2013 FLA Conference!

Loanis Menendez-Cuesta,

President 2011-2013

App of the Week: Prezi

PreziApp: Prezi

Cost: Free

Availability: iPhone & iPad

Developer: Prezi

Prezi for the iPhone: Functionality is limited to viewing and presenting your Prezis. Since your Prezi account lives in the cloud, no matter where you are, you will always have access to your most recent version.

You cannot create or edit your Prezi on the iPhone app, it is simply for viewing. So if you are sitting in the library and you want to go over your presentation before you go live, this is a great way to practice.

Download Prezi for iPhone

Prezi for iPad: With the iPad application, you can create a new Prezi and edit an existing one. You can also present and share your Prezi right from your tablet. With the iPad, you can rotate your text, images and frames with your fingers, resize your paths, and tap & drag to create text and more. This app gives you great mobility with your Prezi. If you are out traveling to another branch or campus library, take your iPad with you and you will have access anywhere you go.

Download Prezi for iPad

In my opinion, the only downfall is that it isn’t available on Android devices yet. I would also like to see them add more functionality to the iPhone app such as correcting a quick typo or adding a photo from your photo stream

Pasco County Library System: Creative Lab

pasco librariesThis weeks innovation corner comes from Paul Stonebridge, Teen Services Manager for Pasco County Library System. He has put together the message below about their newest project, a Creative Lab.

The Land O Lakes Branch of our system is going to be the future home of our new Creative Lab, currently in the works. It will feature a conversion of a study room to a sound-resistant recording and editing studio. The studio will contain professional microphones, a small recording station, space for a guitar or other medium to small-sized instruments, and two powerful computers with full software suites. We plan to have both a PC and an iMac in there, with 27+ inch monitors. Software will include Sony Vegas Pro, After Effects, Garage Band, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop CS6, and more. Plus, we will have a host of freely available software, such as Gimp and Blender. The public will be able to reserve the room for use in hour blocks after receiving brief training and certification in the operation of the equipment. The training will give them a certification sticker for their library card, which will them allow them access to the booking. The room will still be available to be booked for traditional studying and as a quiet room, though the certification requirement will still stand.

The next line of projects will involve a potential renovation of the dual-desk format at the Land O Lakes Branch, resulting in a single, combined Information and Circulation desk on one side of the building, with open space on the other. We hope to re-purpose this area into a business center and incubation station, where aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business startups would have access to computer workstations, complete with Internet, printing, faxing, scanning, wi-fi, and a full host of traditional office tools to help grow a business from the ground up without requiring the need for a huge investment just to develop an idea. Our hope is that more people with good ideas, but limited resources, will be able to get their businesses off the ground. Those that find success, would eventually move on from our space and find their own, much like a gardener would transplant a sprouted seedling from its initial germination pot.

If you have questions and would like to talk with Paul, you can reach him through the contact information below.

Governor Rick Scott’s Recommendations for Library Funding

On Thursday afternoon Governor Scott published his 2013-14 budget recommendations for the legislature to consider in the coming Regular Session. You can view the complete funding source on the Florida Families First Website.

§  State Aid to Public Libraries – The Governor recommends $20,235,401, a reduction of $1,064,599 from the current year’s $21.3 million.  The Governor’s recommendation is the same as the amount requested by the Secretary of State and the reduction is attributed to a reduction in federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding allocated to Florida.  The $21.3 million appropriation was necessary to meet an LSTA maintenance of effort requirement so when the LSTA funding was reduced, the maintenance of effort was reduced as well.  The library community will be working hard to persuade legislators to appropriate more.

§  Library Cooperative Funding – Governor Scott recommends $1 million for Library Cooperative Grants used by Florida’s multitype library cooperatives to support resource sharing among Florida libraries.  Governor Scott had vetoed Library Cooperative funding for the current year so the library cooperatives and libraries that rely on them for services are particularly appreciative of Governor Scott’s support for 2013-14 funding.

§  Florida Virtual Campus – Governor Scott recommends $23,927,294 for the Florida Virtual Campus that includes support for university and college library automation and licensed electronic resources.  This is an increase of $447,877 over the current year’s $23,497,417.  The FLVC provides distance learning and academic advising as well as college and university library services.

The Florida Library Community thanks Governor Scott for his understanding of the value of library services enjoyed by Floridians and his continued support for library funding!
